
MFTs in Idaho
The state of Idaho began licensing Marriage & Family Therapists in 2001. The Idaho Division of AAMFT, the Idaho Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (IDAMFT) is actively working to position the profession of Marriage and Family Therapy as a legitimate and powerful mental health entity in the state of Idaho. IDAMFT is currently taking steps to improve its organizational structure, increase membership enrollment, provide excellent continuing education, secure parity with other mental health professionals, and to elevate MFTs visibility and respect in the public mind.IDAMFT has a fully functioning board of directors, holds annual conferences, sponsors bi-weekly professional discussion groups, engages in local and federal advocacy efforts, and works closely with government and community officials.

IDAHO LAWS DEFINING THE SCOPE OF PRACTICE OF MFTS
- The State of Idaho passed legislation in 2001 that licensed Marriage & Family Therapists. These statutes (54-3401) defined marriage and family therapy as:
- “the evaluation and treatment of mental and emotional disorders, whether cognitive, affective or behavioral, within the context of marriage and family systems.”
- “the professional application of psychotherapeutic and family systems theories and techniques in the delivery of services to individuals, couples and families for the purpose of treating nervous and mental disorders.”
