MEDICAL COST OFFSET EFFECT:
There is a growing body of literature confirming that family systems based interventions provided by MFTs have a medical cost offset effect. One study found that HMO enrollees who received marital or family therapy reduced their use of professional health care services by 21.5%.
CLIENTS/PATIENTS REPORT HIGH SATISFACTION WITH THE SERVICES THEY RECEIVE FROM MFTS:
Recent studies have shown that clients are highly satisfied with services of Marriage and Family Therapists. Specifically, clients report marked improvement in work productivity, co-worker relationships, family relationships, partner relationships, emotional health, overall health, social life, and community involvement.
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPISTS ARE UNIQUELY TRAINED:
MFTs are the only mental health professions specifically trained and required to evaluate and treat mental and emotional disorders from a family systems perspective.
MARRIAGE & FAMILY THERAPY: A CORE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSION:
MFTs have been designated by the federal government as one of the five core mental health professions along with psychiatry, psychology, social work and psychiatric nursing.
MENTAL HEALTH SHORTAGE AREAS:
All of Idaho’s 44 counties have been designated by the federal government as mental health professional shortage areas. LMFTs are currently practicing in 19 of those counties. Efforts are underway to ensure that MFTs have contract privileges with all insurance and government entities offering mental health services.
